There are many parts of games people take note of and talk about. The art, the code, the sound track and much more. But a big one that is least talked about when it comes to casual players is level design. People would say level design is for games like Mario and Sonic, some of the most common platformers because they have “levels/stages” that you progress through. But as a shock to some of you, almost every game has a sense of level design. Level design isn’t always “levels/stages”, they can be the manipulation of numbers, balancing and creating characters and even the general mechanics of the game itself. In this class, we will be deep diving into what exactly is level design and how many well known games have succeeded in this branch and show how the small things when it comes to game design and diverge an ok game, into a great one.
