About this class

Anyone can be a scientist right in their own backyard. This course introduces students to observing and documenting the natural world while actively engaging with their surroundings.

Participants will learn how to record and share their findings with a broader community of citizen scientists and researchers, contributing to real-world conservation and biodiversity efforts.

Students will build skills in careful observation, data collection, and environmental awareness while developing a deeper sense of stewardship for local ecosystems.

No prior ecological knowledge is required.

The class is led by an instructor who is part of the inaugural cohort of iNaturalist Ambassadors, bringing both expertise and a passion for community-driven science. This course is offered in flexible two-week sessions—join us for one, two, or all three to deepen your experience!

Affinity Class Instructor

Alyssa Armour is the master of our science courses. In college, she established the Physical Science tutoring department at Nassau Community College, and represented Stony Brook University at the New England Intercollegiate Geological Conference before graduating from the latter in 2017 with a BA in Earth and Space Sciences. She is excited to be back teaching with the Affinity team and share per passions for science!
